Keynote Lecture Abstract

Topic: The vital role of the Press in promoting global collaboration and resolution of complex challenges

Many global and regional challenges can only be effectively addressed when nations agree to work and collaborate together. Agreeing on a common course of action will require member states to first acknowledge and recognise each other’s interests and positions, and then intensely negotiating with each other to reach a win-win resolution that strikes a harmonious equilibrium between conflicting interests and requirements.

The Press plays a quintessential role in this process by clearly presenting the issue, and fairly highlighting the concerns, positions and arguments of the various stakeholders. It also value adds by advocating for the common good, illuminating blind spots, and elevating underserved interests. Last but not least, the Press could also help to hold those in authority accountable in following through on their commitments.
