United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation

Established in 1946, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) comprises 194 member states and 12 observer states. Its main area of focus includes: the right to education, the sharing of technological advancements, freedom to participate in cultural activities and press freedom.

OVERVIEW

In this council, delegates will be tackling the question of Virtual and Digital Heritage in the Metaverse. This can be further broken down into the commercialisation, equal accessibility, authenticity, sustainability and commodification of the digital heritage.

Currently, in the face of the rapid development of digital technologies, especially the metaverse and artificial intelligence, UNESCO is actively responding to the opportunities and challenges brought about by virtual museums, digital twins and digital heritage, and is committed to ensuring that these emerging technologies can serve the protection of heritage, dissemination of knowledge and cultural dialogue for all mankind in an inclusive and equitable manner.

The council hopes that the delegates will gain new insights through council debate.

Liu Yiming

Yiming is a JC1 student from Hwa Chong Institution. Most of the time, you can catch her running after her bus home or watching one hour long Kdrama summaries while playing 2048 on split screen. She is also constantly craving for food, and right now she’s thinking of that cheese prata from the hawker centre. Did you know Hawker Culture in Singapore was successfully inscribed as Singapore's first element on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity? She hopes that all delegates will have fruitful discussions at BYMUN 2026!

Sofie Yeo

Sofie is a secondary 4 student from NYGH taking Advanced History, Biology and Japanese. Outside of school, she finds it hard to resist binge-watching a whole season of her favourite series in one day, be it 2000s rom-coms or Modern Family, Gilmore Girls and Greys Anatomy. She also enjoys anything related to high-elements like bouldering and ziplining, for the sky’s the limit! As UNESCO Council Chair, she hopes she can help delegates find their footing and soar to greater heights in their knowledge at BYMUN 2026.

Sun Yuqi

Yuqi is a Secondary 4 student from Nanyang Girls’ High School. As a member of the Theatre Club, she enjoys watching TV shows and horror movies. On her way to school, you might spot her painstakingly trying to listen to specific Conan Gray songs and skipping advertisements since she does not have Spotify Premium. As an ESTP, Yuqi is an extrovert who is always either busy planning an outing or already on her way to one. She hopes that delegates will have a fulfilling time at UNESCO 2026 and forge lasting friendships, from discussing the council topic in UNESCO to listening to the same playlist on Spotify together.
